  • Today’s SMH story on the Dobell prize is a great example of where a good photo is an inappropriate choice for completing a story.

‘I’m flabbergasted [to win], especially with this work,” Judell said yesterday, after being awarded the $25,000 prize for her work, Breath. ”It’s so shy and retiring and meditative … I just didn’t think it was prize-winning.”

While the chosen photo has character and shows a nice interaction between the artist and the gallery director, the essence of the story - the “shy -retiring” prize winning drawing - is the visual key to this story and an image of the drawing would have added crucial information to complete the reader’s experience of the event. The least they could have done was provide a link to Anne Judell’s website where sure enough the winning drawing is on her home page.
