But a photographer with a long lens captured the private moment. Overnight, the photograph went viral, becoming an iconic image from Sunday’s 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Robert Peraza, 68, was taking a moment to collect his thoughts, walking alone through the National September 11 Memorial, when he spotted his son’s name engraved in the bronze railings that frame massive reflecting pools erected in the footprints of the World Trade Center’s twin towers.
